Young London (review) @ XOYO - 29th April 2012

After hearing about the success of the last Young London, I was eager to see what would be in store for the next show. The day had finally arrived and I was bursting with excitement.

I felt a wave of nostalgia rush through me as the DJ for the night, Naija Boi, played a notable selection of R&B tunes from the 90’s which I’m sure most of the audience had forgotten about. As the last song faded out, the lively female hosts, Remel London & Mika appeared to give a comical but somewhat impressive rendition of Montell Jordan’s ‘This is how we do it.’ They did a successful job in warming up the crowd for the first act and keeping the audience entertained throughout the show.

The opening act, Matthew ‘Mista’ Robinson took to the stage and instantly caught my attention with his falsetto while performing his version of Climax by Usher. Then he moved on to perform one of his own songs called ‘Rescue’ where he gave a cheeky wink to female in the audience.

Rapper Tee Stone from the collective Lost Boys had me tapping my feet and bopping my head along to a lively performance of two tracks.

The next artist, Tinyman, had a tiny frame but he had a big stage presence which made him hard to forget. Amongst the two tracks he chose to perform on the night, the one which stood out the most for me was ‘Days Like This’.

Poetry was provided by Dan Bosi, delivered 3 thought provoking poems. The last line from the 3rd poem ‘Letter To My Father’ will always stand out for me as it was simple but so effective. ‘I ain’t even mad / I just find it hard to call you D…’ I love it when poets don’t need to finish off a word to get their point across!

Wreh Asha amazed me with such a powerful voice. Her music was a cross between Soul and Jazz. I loved the confidence & attitude she had while she was singing. I could tell she was enjoying herself, & I enjoyed her performance.

There was something quite unique about Sid. As he approached the stage, I took time to admire his quiff hairstyle and purple blazer. My admiration grew as he continued to sing smoothly and effortlessly whilst playing the piano. Who said men can’t multi task?

After a short break, Kae Kurd added more banter to the evening. He added his own comical twists on birthdays, growing up, and racial stereotypes as well as pulling off a mixture of different accents. His delivery of a school teacher with an Australian accent had me in stitches.

I enjoyed the interesting mix of singing and rapping from Chockz. Although I preferred his rapping over his singing, his music would be the kind of stuff I’d relax to on a mellow Sunday afternoon.

One of my favourite acts on the night was Dionne Reid, who blew me away with her soulful voice and vocal control. I also liked the energy she had on stage, and the charismatic way she interacted with the audience.

The closing act was led by Mista Silva performing his well known hits ‘Bo Won Sem Ma Me’ and ‘Boom Boom Tah.’ As if the crowd weren’t already hyped up, Naija Boi took stage to dance and probably showcased the best azonto I’ve seen this year.

The night ended with a jam session by the talented live band The White Elephant.

I thoroughly enjoyed the show and the amount of talent that was present. Even though I was standing for most of the evening, it was worth it.

I don’t ask for much. This busy life that we all live…..we get caught up in it all & we forget to spend adequate time with our loved ones - which is why appreciate it when someone takes time out of their busy schedule to spend time with ME.

kamara:

Pushing people away is so easy mainly because they’re willing to leave when you tell them to go, this reinforcing why you pushed them in the first place. I give all or nothing. Personal inclination. I don’t ask for anything. But I get tired of having half hearted people float in and out of my life…

Anonymous asked: whats ur opinion on hoes?

Answer:

lol, each to their own I guess. Their actions do not directly affect my life, therefore I don’t care. ‘Yolo’ innit.
